Exam Components

 
   

Flower identification:
From slide images, participants must write the common name of each and select the correct botanical name from a list.

Flower and plant care and handling:
This section will be comprised of a combination of short answers, matching and multiple-choice questions.

Floral design: 
This section will be comprised of a combination of short answers, short essays, matching and multiple choice questions on:
Design elements and principles
Color and light in floral design
Floral design concepts and styles
Considering the container
Techniques and mechanics

Hands-on Design:
According to a specific function and other instructions assigned four weeks prior to the exam, such as romantic, contemporary, traditional, abstract, etc., each applicant will be required to submit on arrival:

  • Pre-designed table centerpiece
  • Finished wired corsage (no gluing will be allowed)
 
 

Judging

 
   

The completed arrangements will be judged according to:

  • Design elements and principles
  • Color and light in floral design
  • Floral design concepts and styles
  • Considering the container
  • Techniques and mechanics
 
 

What to bring

 
   

Applicants will be provided the flowers, containers and mechanics necessary to execute the following:

  • Hand-tied bouquet
  • Sympathy design
  • Surprise package

Applicants will provide their own tools and supplies. A recommended list will be included in the information packet.

 
 

Tentative Test Day Schedule

 
   

8:30 – 9:00
9:00 – 11:30 
11:30 - 12:15 
12:15 –2:30 
2:30 – 3:00  
3:00 – 4:00
   

Check in. Hand in centerpiece and corsage
Written section (including 15 minute break)
Lunch break
Sympathy design, hand-tied bouquet
Afternoon break
Surprise package
 
   

When the applicant leaves, he/she takes with them the centerpiece,hand-tied bouquet and corsage.  The sympathy design and surprise package will remain to allow the judges ample time to examine each piece.

Flowers that are left will be donated the following day to the hospital, convalescent home or senior center of the exam committee’s choice.

   
  Results  
   

The results of your exams will be sent to you by mail within three weeks of the exam. If you have passed the exam, your California Certified Florist Certificate of Distinction will be included.
